Trompeter Now Delivering Twinax/Triax MDM Cable Assemblies For Military Network Application
- Innovative cable assembly, dubbed the MDM Octopus™, provides lighter weight, high density Mil-Spec solution -
Mesa, AZ (February 1, 2006) -- Trompeter, a leading provider of interconnect solutions for military and aerospace communications systems, announces the availability of the MDM Octopus™, a multi-interconnect shielded cable assembly featuring multiple Trompeter twinax or triax RF connectors terminated on one end and a single MDM (Microminiature D Metal) multi-pin connector terminated on the opposite end. The MDM Octopus answers a call from the user community for a densely packaged multi-pin interconnect that is also a light weight shielded assembly ideal for secure communications, aircraft applications and box-to-box networking. The MDM Octopus is compliant with MIL-DTL-83513, a joint services specification.
The MDM connector is on 50mil centers and available in various pin counts. A respected supplier of twinax and triax RF connectors for 45 years, Trompeter’s cable assembly operation in Mesa, AZ is now fully qualified to provide factory-terminated twinax or triax cable with 100 and 50-pin versions of the MDM.
In response to a special request from a US prime contractor seeking to expand their supply chain, the Trompeter engineering team discovered an innovative design approach that netted significant savings in size and weight in addition to production efficiencies. The new Trompeter MDM Octopus features a unique metal backshell that replaces the traditional molded polymer backshell approach to managing multiple interconnects in tight spaces. This design evolution results in both a more secure electrical EMI/RFI ground and combat-ready package.
“The advantage of the MDM Octopus for applications like mobile battlefield communications is significant,” said Don Gerbis, director of the RF cable assembly business unit of Trompeter. “Designing and manufacturing twinax and triax RF connectors are longstanding strengths at Trompeter, as is the sophisticated soldering involved with manufacturing RF cable assemblies. Consequently, Trompeter can deliver very high yields and low manufacturing costs on this technology, which passes through to our customer in terms of short lead times and best price. We anticipate this new product offering to be a strong contributor to our sales this year and into the future for programs leading up to and including WIN-T”.
